The academic year at Polish universities usually starts in early October and lasts until the end of June, consisting of two semesters:

- Winter semester: begins in early October and ends in late January, followed by winter exams in February.

- Summer semester: starts in March and lasts until the end of June, followed by summer exams.

There are breaks between semesters: winter break (February), summer holidays (July–October), and Easter holidays (April).

Exams and assessments are divided into two main sessions — winter and summer, held at the end of each semester.

- Course assessments (colloquiums) take place during the semester for each subject. They can be written, oral, or practical. A pass is required to be eligible for the final exam.

- Final exams are held during the session and evaluate the knowledge acquired in the course. Exams may include tests, essays, oral responses, or project defenses.

Professors often offer a "zerowy" (zero) exam attempt, allowing students to pass the course before the main exam session. Students who fail an exam have the right to retake it. One key feature of Polish education is the emphasis on independent study and active participation throughout the semester.

Polish universities use a six-point grading scale as follows:

5.0 – Excellent (bardzo dobry) – highest grade
4.5 – Very good (dobry plus)
4.0 – Good (dobry)
3.5 – Satisfactory plus (dostateczny plus)
3.0 – Satisfactory (dostateczny) – minimum passing grade
2.0 – Fail (niedostateczny) – exam failed
