Study in Hungary: Universities, Costs and Admission

If you want to study in Hungary, you are looking at one of the most affordable ways to get an English-taught degree inside the European Union. Business, engineering, IT, design and full six-year medicine are all taught in English, and the country runs its own government scholarship, Stipendium Hungaricum, for students from more than 100 partner countries.

Hungary suits applicants who want an EU degree without Western European fees, and future doctors ready to sit a real entrance exam in biology and chemistry. It also suits students from Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Egypt and Bangladesh, whose countries are all on the scholarship list.

It is a weaker fit if you need a guaranteed place, expect the scholarship to cover all your costs, or plan to live in Budapest on a very tight budget. Below you will find fees by level, the types of universities, the admission steps, the visa route and the risks we explain to every family before they apply.

How much does it cost to study in Hungary?

Across the four classic medical universities (Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs), English-taught medicine costs roughly €15,800–18,700 or $16,750–17,900 per year. Semmelweis and Szeged bill in euros, Debrecen and Pécs in dollars. Budget separately for application and exam fees, which every university charges. Types of universities in Hungary

Universities in Hungary fall into four groups, and the group decides which diploma you receive and whether the scholarship applies. The table below is the quickest way to see the difference.

The "foundation" group needs a short explanation. Since 2021, several large state universities have been run by public foundations instead of directly by the state. This model is now being reformed (details in the "What to know" section below). These universities stay public; do not confuse them with private schools.

Admission requirements

Each university admits international students directly through its own online portal and checks your school certificate itself. You do not need a separate recognition procedure before applying. Most bachelor's programs ask for a completed secondary school certificate, English at roughly intermediate level or higher, and an online interview or test. Medicine adds a subject exam.

Consular legalization usually runs through your Ministry of Education, then your Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Hungarian embassy. Translations can be into English; you do not have to use one specific Hungarian translation office to apply. For GCC expat families, one rule matters: scholarship applications go through the student's country of citizenship, not the country of residence.

Student visa and documents

Citizens of Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Egypt apply for a residence permit for the purpose of studies at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in their home country. Once it is approved, you get an entry visa and then collect your residence card after arrival in Hungary, usually within 30 days.

What you will need:

• proof of admission from your university;
• proof of funds for the whole year, covering tuition and living costs (there is no fixed official minimum balance);
• proof of accommodation, meaning an address in Hungary;

Five things to plan for

• Stipendium Hungaricum is competitive and nomination-based. Your application counts only if your country's Sending Partner nominates you; then the university tests you and the Tempus Public Foundation makes the final decision. A good exam result alone does not guarantee the scholarship. Apply to fee-paying programs in parallel as plan B.
• The scholarship does not cover everything. In the latest round it included free tuition, 43,700 HUF (about €110) per month, a dormitory place or 40,000 HUF per month toward rent, and health care. The program itself says the rent support does not cover costs in big cities, especially Budapest. Budget your own money on top.
• English-taught medicine is not "admission without exams." Every classic medical university tests biology and chemistry (or physics) and interviews you in English. The pace is demanding, and universities do not publish official dropout figures. If your science is weak, a preparatory year (Debrecen's Basic Medicine Course or McDaniel's Pre-Med track) is the honest route, though it does not guarantee a place.

On recognition back home: Hungary's accreditation agency (MAB) is recognized by WFME until 31 March 2032. That is a statement about the accreditor, not about each university. Living costs, work and student life

A student in Budapest needs roughly €800–1,300 per month. The lower end means a shared flat or a dormitory, the upper end a studio of your own. In Debrecen and other regional cities, plan for roughly 15–25% less, starting from about €650 per month.

Find housing early. Semmelweis allocates its dormitory places on social criteria in August, which is too late for most visa applicants. McDaniel College has no dormitory at all. Debrecen tells fee-paying students to arrange their own accommodation before September. You also need an address for your residence permit.

On a student residence permit you can work up to 30 hours per week during the semester, and full time for up to 90 days a year outside it. After graduation, you can apply for a residence permit to seek a job or start a business for up to 9 months. From there, you can move to a Hungarian Card or an EU Blue Card without leaving the country.

Universities we work with

Five universities, five routes

• **Budapest Metropolitan University (METU)** is a private university for business, tourism, communication and design. Business bachelor's degrees cost €3,500 per semester, and its Stipendium Hungaricum places cover only five creative programs.
• **IBS Budapest** is a private, state-recognized business college. Its English-taught degrees are joint programs with the University of Buckingham, so graduates receive a Buckingham degree and an IBS degree. IBS is not part of Stipendium Hungaricum.
• **McDaniel College Budapest** is the branch campus of an American college, registered in Hungary as a foreign institution. Students earn an American Bachelor of Arts. It also runs a Pre-Med preparatory track (€8,250 for two semesters).
