Study in UAE: Dubai Branch Campuses, Costs and Admission

To study in UAE as an international student usually means studying in Dubai, at a branch campus of a UK or Australian university. The 41 private universities supervised by KHDA in Dubai taught 42,026 students. Thirty-seven of them were branch campuses of foreign universities, and 35% of all students came from abroad.

The UAE suits you if you want a UK or Australian degree, taught in English, without moving to the UK or Australia. It also works for families already living in the Gulf and for students who plan a career in the region. The university sponsors your student visa, and most campuses take new students in September and January.

It is not a budget destination. Bachelor's tuition at most branch campuses is about AED 60,000–80,000 a year, and a year of living costs in Dubai can cost as much again. There is no British-style post-study work visa. School certificates from Pakistan and Nigeria often lead to a foundation year instead of direct entry. If a European option is also on your list, compare this route with studying in Poland.

How much does it cost to study in UAE?

Bachelor's programs at UK and Australian branch campuses cost roughly AED 60,000–80,000 a year (about $16,000–22,000) on current price lists; engineering and computing sit at the top of that range or slightly above. Most fees for the next academic year are not yet published, so check the university's price list before you apply.

Several universities fix your tuition for the whole course: what you pay in year one stays the same until you graduate (Heriot-Watt, Birmingham, Curtin; at Middlesex the net fee stays fixed and only VAT changes can apply). Budget for one-off fees too. Heriot-Watt charges a non-refundable AED 300 application fee, Curtin charges AED 367 to apply and AED 3,500 at registration, and Birmingham charges no application fee but takes an AED 5,000 deposit that counts toward your tuition.

Scholarships: what international students can actually get

• Scholarships at private campuses in Dubai are tuition discounts, not cash paid to you.
• Heriot-Watt Merit Scholarship: 30%, 40% or 50% of first-year net tuition, spread over all years. The thresholds are 80%, 85% and 90% for both CBSE and Pakistan's FBISE HSSC.
• UOWD Academic Merit Scholarship: 15%, 25% or 50% on the four-year route, open to any nationality, with limited places.

Types of universities in UAE

Most international students choose a private branch campus in one of Dubai's education free zones. Federal universities accept international students too, but charge full fees per credit hour. In 2025/26, campuses of IIM Ahmedabad and the American University of Beirut also opened in Dubai, according to regional media.

Admission requirements

Your school certificate decides whether you enter the first year directly or start with a foundation year. Most bachelor's programs ask for IELTS Academic 6.0, and foundation programs usually ask for 5.5. Apply well before your intake: after the offer, the visa alone needs about 8 weeks of lead time.

Entry routes by country (bachelor's)

• India (CBSE, ISC): direct entry often starts at 65% (Middlesex, Heriot-Watt management) or 60% in the best four subjects (Curtin). Birmingham expects roughly 75–90% depending on the program; with 65% you can enter its Integrated Foundation Year.
• Pakistan (HSSC): Heriot-Watt accepts 70% for management and Curtin asks for 75%. UOWD asks for 88% on its three-year route and 65% on its four-year route. At Middlesex, FSc/HSSC holders start with the International Foundation Programme (60%).
• Nigeria (WAEC, NECO): Heriot-Watt takes five subjects at B2 for management, psychology and design; engineering and computing start with a foundation year. Middlesex admits WAEC holders to its foundation program only, and UOWD to its four-year route only.

What to know before you apply

KHDA licensing and federal accreditation are not the same thing

Dubai's free-zone universities are licensed by KHDA. Federal recognition comes from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) and its Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), first for the institution and then for each program. If you need your degree for a UAE government job, a regulated profession or further study at a CAA-accredited university, check that both the university and your specific program are accredited. In February 2025, MoHESR licensed 16 Dubai universities, so most large branch campuses now hold both; all five universities we work with are on the federal CAA list.

Recognition back home is a separate question

Branch campuses award the parent university's degree. How your home country treats it depends on its own rules, especially for regulated professions, so check with the relevant authority before you commit.

Plan for the total cost, not just tuition

Living costs of AED 5,500–9,000 a month can match or exceed your tuition over a year. Add the visa package, the medical test (about AED 250–550) and your first rent deposit. Build this budget before you accept an offer.

Do not count on part-time work to pay the fees

Students can work only under specific permits, and Curtin's fee policy states that a student on its visa cannot work outside them. Treat work as experience, not as income for tuition.

Safety: check official advice before you travel

The situation in the region changed several times in 2026, and UAE universities briefly moved to remote learning in spring, according to local media. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office does not advise against travel to the UAE, but warns of possible escalation, flight cancellations and airspace closures. Check your own government's travel advice before you book.

Living costs, work and student life in Dubai

Without rent, one person in Dubai needs about AED 4,207 (about $1,145) a month, according to Numbeo. If you study in Dubai on your own, a realistic budget is about AED 5,500–9,000 a month, including a shared room in a student residence. None of our partner universities runs its own dormitories; they work with private residences, and at Middlesex partners rent includes furniture, Wi-Fi and utilities.

Monthly costs to plan for

• Student residence: from about AED 2,200 (triple room) to AED 7,450 (studio) a month, plus a deposit of AED 3,000–3,500 (Middlesex partner prices).
• Private one-bedroom apartment: about AED 5,507 outside the center and AED 8,800 in the center (Numbeo).
• Transport: a regular monthly pass costs about AED 275. The student Nol card gives 50% off the metro, tram, buses and water transport, but only up to age 23; it costs AED 70.

Working while you study

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) issues a three-month Student Training and Employment Permit for students aged 15 and over who are already in the UAE. The employer applies, usually with a no-objection letter from your university. A separate part-time work permit also exists. Ask the university's careers office before you accept any job.

After graduation

There is no separate post-study work visa. Graduates move to an employer's work visa, a job exploration visa (60, 90 or 120 days, for graduates of the world's top 500 universities, among other conditions) or a Golden Visa. The 10-year Golden Visa for UAE graduates requires a CGPA of at least 3.5 (class A university) or 3.8 (class B), graduation within the last two years and a degree attested by MoHESR.

The largest UK university in Dubai by KHDA data (Middlesex University: THE 501–600), with campuses in Dubai Knowledge Park, Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Media City. Founded in 1993 as the first Australian university in the UAE, now in Dubai Knowledge Park. It offers three-year and four-year bachelor's routes, and credits can transfer to UOW campuses in Australia (UOW: THE 201–250). University of Wollongong in Dubai

Heriot-Watt University Dubai

The first British university to open a campus in Dubai, in 2005 (Heriot-Watt: THE 401–500); since 2021 it has been in Dubai Knowledge Park. All 71 programs received CAA accreditation in 2025, and Go Global lets you move to the UK or Malaysia after year one. Heriot-Watt University Dubai

University of Birmingham Dubai

A Russell Group university (THE: =98, QS: 68) with its own campus in Dubai International Academic City since 2022. Fees are the highest of the five; transfers to the UK campus are not offered, but most bachelor's programs include an optional exchange year. University of Birmingham Dubai

Curtin University Dubai

A branch of Western Australia's Curtin University in Dubai International Academic City, with CAA institutional accreditation since January 2025 (Curtin: THE 251–300). Its eight-month foundation program leads to guaranteed progression to the bachelor's degree if you meet the requirements.
