Universities in Dubai for International Students: How to Compare Campuses
Five UK and Australian campuses side by side: accreditation, tuition, intakes and entry routes.
Most universities in Dubai that international students apply to are branch campuses of foreign universities: you study in Dubai and graduate with the home university's degree. This page compares five of them side by side (Middlesex, Heriot-Watt and Birmingham from the UK, Wollongong and Curtin from Australia) by accreditation, tuition, intakes and entry routes.
42,026 students studied at 41 private higher education institutions supervised by Dubai's regulator, and 37 of those institutions were branch campuses of foreign universities. International students made up 35% of enrolments.
This guide is written for applicants from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt, and for expat families already living in the UAE. If your parents are UAE residents, they can sponsor your student residence visa: sons up to age 25, and daughters for as long as they are unmarried.
KHDA vs CAA: what the two licenses mean for your degree
Dubai universities are regulated at two levels. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) licenses universities in Dubai's free zones, such as Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) and Dubai Knowledge Park (DKP). At the federal level, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) works through its Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA).
Federal recognition happens in two stages. First the university receives institutional licensure, then each program is accredited separately. A federal license generally lets graduates have their degree and transcript attested by MoHESR, which is how a qualification gets official recognition in the UAE.
Why this matters: if you plan to work in the UAE public sector, enter a regulated profession or continue at a CAA-accredited university, check that both the university and your specific program are accredited. The UAE Golden Visa for top graduates also requires a MoHESR-attested degree.
The gap between the two systems has narrowed. In 2025, MoHESR and KHDA signed agreements to speed up federal licensing, and in February 2025 MoHESR reportedly licensed 16 Dubai institutions at once. All five universities below hold both a KHDA license and CAA accreditation.

Fees are the latest published. Only Heriot-Watt has already published prices for the upcoming intakes, so check each price list before you apply. Middlesex also holds a KHDA 5-star rating, and Birmingham offers an optional exchange year in the UK on most bachelor's programs.
| University | Parent university | Campus | UAE status | Bachelor's tuition | Main intakes |

Which are the best universities in Dubai? What the rankings say
Dubai campuses are not ranked separately; rankings describe the parent university as a whole. Here is where each parent sits in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings:
- University of Birmingham: =98 (and 68 in the QS World University Rankings)
- University of Wollongong: 201–250
- Curtin University: 251–300
Entry routes: direct first year or foundation?
Several national school certificates do not give direct entry to year 1, and a foundation year adds time and cost. The table shows the published minimums for business-type bachelor's programs; engineering and computing often ask for more.
| University | India (CBSE) | Pakistan (HSSC / FSc) | Nigeria (WAEC / NECO) |
|---|---|---|---|
Middlesex Dubai | Year 1: 65% overall (IT programs also 70% in math) | Foundation (IFP) with 60%; year 1 only after a year of university study | Foundation (IFP) only |
Heriot-Watt Dubai | Year 1 (management): 65% | Year 1 (management): 70% | Year 1 (management): 5 subjects at B2; engineering and computing via Foundation |
Birmingham Dubai | Year 1: about 75–90% depending on program; Integrated Foundation: 65% | Integrated Foundation: 70% | Integrated Foundation: 5 subjects at B3, none below C5 |
For Egyptian applicants, UOWD publishes a clear rule: Thanaweya Amma with 70% gives entry to its 4-year route. The other four universities do not list Egypt on the pages we checked, so ask admissions directly.
Most of these campuses ask for IELTS Academic 6.0 for a bachelor's degree. Minimum band scores differ: Middlesex and Heriot-Watt accept 5.5 in each band, while Curtin wants 6.0 in every band. UOWD does not accept IELTS Online.
What studying in Dubai really costs
Tuition is only part of the bill. Universities also charge fees when you apply, accept the offer and get the student visa, which the university sponsors.
| University | Application fee | To accept the offer | Student visa package (applying from abroad) |
|---|---|---|---|
Middlesex Dubai | Not listed | 3,000 AED deposit | 5,555.22 AED plus a 2,500 AED refundable deposit |
Heriot-Watt Dubai | 300 AED, non-refundable | 10% of first-year tuition plus a 1,000 AED refundable deposit | 3,315 AED plus a 3,000 AED refundable deposit; university insurance 1,469 AED if you have none |
Birmingham Dubai | None | 5,000 AED, non-refundable, counted toward tuition | 7,068.10 AED, including a 3,000 AED refundable deposit |
Living costs come on top. Without tuition, a student in Dubai needs roughly 5,500–9,000 AED a month (about $1,500–2,450), including a residence room, food, transport and personal spending. None of the five universities runs its own dormitory; they partner with private residences. Middlesex's partners charge from 2,200 AED a month for a triple room to 7,450 AED for a studio, with Wi-Fi and utilities included. Students aged 23 or younger can get a Nol card with 50% off Dubai public transport.
Scholarships in Dubai are tuition discounts, not cash. Heriot-Watt's Merit Scholarship gives 30–50% off first-year fees (CBSE 80–90%+), spread across all years. UOWD offers 15–50% on its 4-year route to any nationality. Birmingham's Chancellor's scholarship (15–30%) was published for the current intake only.

How to choose a Dubai campus in six steps
Decide what the degree is for. If you need it for a UAE government job, a regulated profession or recognition at home, start from accreditation, not from rankings.
Check your school certificate against each university's entry table. Find out whether you go straight into year 1 or through a foundation.
Calculate the full cost: tuition for every year, plus any foundation year, the visa package, deposits and 12 months of living costs.
Match the intake to your timeline. Dubai universities advise submitting visa documents at least 8 weeks before the semester starts.
Start document legalization early. The UAE does not accept the apostille: your certificates go through your education authority, your foreign ministry, the UAE embassy and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
What to know before you apply
Here is what we tell every family before they apply.
Risks and how to handle them
- A KHDA license is not the same as CAA accreditation. All five campuses on this page hold both, but other Dubai institutions may not. Check the university and your exact program on the CAA list before you pay a deposit.
- Recognition at home is decided by your own country's rules. Before you enroll, ask the relevant authority in your country how it treats a degree issued by a UK or Australian university and studied in Dubai. This matters most for regulated professions.
- The real cost is tuition plus housing. A three-year bachelor's at Middlesex costs 193,671 AED in tuition alone at current rates; with a foundation year and living costs, budget for four years, not three.
