Dubai Student Visa: How the University-Sponsored Residence Permit Works
Who sponsors you, which papers to legalize, what you pay in AED and what your options are after graduation, for the January and September intakes.
A Dubai student visa is a residence permit sponsored by your university, or by your parents if they already live in the UAE. It is usually issued for one year, renewed every year, and comes with an Emirates ID card that expires together with the visa.
You do not apply at a consulate yourself. Once you accept an offer and pay what the university asks, it applies for your entry permit. After you land, you do a medical test and Emirates ID biometrics, and the residence visa is issued.

Who can sponsor your UAE student visa
There are two possible sponsors. The first is the accredited university or college where you study. The second is your parents, if they are expatriates with UAE residence.
Parent sponsorship has limits set by the government:
- sons can be sponsored until age 25;
- daughters can be sponsored regardless of age, as long as they are unmarried.
For most applicants from India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Egypt, the university is the sponsor. Dubai's immigration authority, GDRFA, requires that you are enrolled at an accredited institution, that the university acts as your host and guarantor, and that it is licensed and approved by the relevant regulator. The university also issues a letter stating the length of your program. Family members can live with a student who can provide suitable housing for them.
Entering the UAE before your residence visa
The safest route is an entry permit arranged by your university. Citizens of Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt with ordinary passports generally need a visa in advance. Indian citizens can get a 14-day visa on arrival if they hold a US visa or green card, or a UK or EU residence permit; since 13 February 2025 this also covers residence permits from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Singapore.
If you are already in the UAE, for example on your parents' visa, the university can change your status inside the country, but this costs more.
Step by step: from offer to Emirates ID
Accept your offer and pay — for example, Middlesex University Dubai asks for 25% of annual tuition (or the full outstanding balance) plus visa fees and deposit before it applies.
Send your documents — passport copy, photo, insurance details and the university's visa forms.
The university applies for your entry permit — submit at least 8 weeks before the semester. For a September start, that means early July at the latest.
Travel to the UAE on the entry permit.
Do the medical fitness test — mandatory for residence applicants over 18. It includes a blood test and chest X-ray; unusual results lead to additional tests.
Give biometrics for your Emirates ID — the card expires together with your visa.
Documents for a Dubai student visa
The visa file is short. The bigger task is your education documents: the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is not accepted. Egypt and Nigeria are not Hague members; India and Pakistan (since 9 March 2023) are, but still need consular legalization for the UAE.
What the university and GDRFA usually ask for
- Ordinary passport valid for at least one year (Middlesex rule).
- Photo on a white background.
- Medical fitness certificate and medical insurance.
How to legalize education documents issued abroad
Certification at home — the school, university or national education authority certifies the document, then a local notary.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs — stamp from the foreign ministry of the country where you studied.
UAE embassy — stamp from the UAE embassy in that country (or that country's embassy in the UAE).
UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) — the final stamp inside the UAE.
You also need equivalency. A school certificate goes to the Ministry of Education (MoE), "Equivalency of General Education Certificate from Abroad (Grade 12)". A university degree goes to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR). MoE asks for legalized documents, certified translations of anything not in Arabic or English, and originals of Grade 10, 11 and 12 certificates, which are returned. Processing times are not published, so allow a few weeks to a few months.
You can start studying while this is in progress. University of Birmingham Dubai asks for the documents during the first semester. Heriot-Watt University Dubai gives one semester for equivalency and may withdraw a student who does not get it.

Most of the money goes on the university package and deposit. GDRFA fees plus the medical test, in AED:

As a rule of thumb, a package usually costs about AED 5,500–7,500, plus a refundable deposit of about AED 2,500–5,000. Changing status inside the UAE costs more. Check the exact current amount on your university's visa page.
Proof of funds? We did not find a government minimum bank balance for a student residence visa. Universities require payment instead: a tuition installment, visa fees and deposit before they apply. For the full budget, see cost of studying in Dubai.
Renewal, working while you study and leaving the UAE
The visa is usually issued for one year and renewed annually by your university; Canadian University Dubai, for example, lists a renewal fee of AED 525 (2018 price list). The Emirates ID is renewed with it.
Work needs a permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). There are two routes:
- Student Training and Employment Permit. A company can hire or train a student aged 15 or over who is already in the UAE. It is valid for 3 months; the employer applies.
- Part-time Work Permit. Working for more than one employer requires MOHRE approval.
MOHRE service descriptions list a university no-objection certificate (NOC) for internships, a valid residence visa, a medical certificate and a MOHRE-approved contract. We could not confirm an official weekly-hours cap, so ask your university's careers office first.
When your studies end or the visa is cancelled, GDRFA gives a 60-day grace period to leave or switch to another visa.
After graduation: Golden Visa and job exploration visa
The UAE does not appear to have a separate UK-style post-study work visa. Graduates usually move to an employer's work visa, a job exploration visa, or, if they qualify, a Golden Visa.

For the Golden Visa, the key step is attesting your degree with MoHESR, which requires a federally licensed university. Check this before you enroll.
What to know before you apply
A KHDA license is not MoHESR accreditation. Federally, MoHESR and its Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) license each institution and accredit each program. In Dubai's free zones, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) licenses universities. For UAE government jobs, regulated professions, further study at a CAA university or the Golden Visa, check that both the university and your program are MoHESR/CAA-accredited. The gap is narrowing: in February 2025 MoHESR licensed 16 Dubai universities, and most large branch campuses now hold both licenses.
Recognition at home is a separate question. Your degree is issued by the home university abroad. Rules in India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Egypt depend on your country, so check with the relevant authority at home, especially for regulated careers.
The visa is a small part of the cost. Bachelor's tuition at UK and Australian branch campuses is roughly AED 60,000–80,000 a year, and AED 129,000–157,000 at University of Birmingham Dubai (current prices). Living costs without tuition are about AED 5,500–9,000 a month; Middlesex partner residences start at about AED 2,200 for a shared room. Compare universities in Dubai.
Do not budget on part-time income. Work needs a MOHRE permit, and no official weekly-hours rule is published in the sources we checked.
Safety: check official advice. In 2026 the regional situation changed several times, and in spring UAE universities briefly moved online. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to the UAE but warns of regional risks, possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. Check your own government's current advice before booking.
