Medical education remains one of the most in-demand fields among international students worldwide. The high social status of the profession, stable demand for specialists, and international recognition of diplomas make medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy a priority choice for applicants from different countries.

In recent years, Poland has become one of the key destinations for medical education in Europe. The country offers a wide range of English-taught programs, European education standards, and diplomas recognized in EU countries and beyond. This is why more and more international students consider Poland a realistic and affordable alternative to Western Europe.

Poland as a destination for medical education

Polish medical universities attract international students through a combination of education quality, English-taught programs, and relatively affordable tuition fees. There are more than 15 medical universities in the country offering full English-taught programs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.

Medical programs in Poland are suitable for:

  • international applicants aiming for an EU-recognized diploma;
  • students planning to study in English;
  • those considering a future career or specialization in Europe;
  • applicants who want high-quality medical education without the extremely high costs typical of Western Europe.

1. General Medicine (MD)

General Medicine is by far the most popular medical specialty among international students in Poland. It is a 6-year medical degree program taught in English at many public medical universities.

The vast majority of international medical students choose General Medicine because of the versatility of the diploma, broad career opportunities, and the high international value of the medical profession.

2. Dentistry

Dentistry ranks second in popularity among international students. English-taught dentistry programs are offered by several leading medical universities in Poland. Despite higher competition and tuition fees compared to medicine, the specialty remains in high demand due to the strong earning potential and international recognition of the degree.

3. Pharmacy

Pharmacy is chosen less frequently, but remains a stable option among international applicants. These programs are suitable for students planning careers in the pharmaceutical industry, scientific research, or clinical laboratories. The number of English-taught programs is limited, which makes pharmacy a more niche field.

Tuition fees for Medical Programs

Tuition fees at medical universities in Poland depend on the chosen specialty, university, and language of instruction. Overall, Poland remains more affordable than most Western European countries.

For English-taught programs in General Medicine (MD), tuition fees usually range from 14 000 to 16 000 euro per year. At Medical University of Warsaw, tuition costs 15 000–16 000 euro per year, at Medical University of Gdańsk— about 15 000 euro per year, and at Medical University of Lublin — from 14 000 euro per year.

English-taught dentistry programs are more expensive on average and usually cost from 16 000 to 18 000 euro per year. For example, at the Medical University of Warsaw tuition is 16 000–18 000 euro per year, while at Jagiellonian University Medical College it is around 17 000–18 000 euro per year.

Pharmacy taught in English is significantly more affordable and usually costs from 4 000 to 6 000 euro per year.

Programs taught in Polish are cheaper overall: medicine and dentistry usually cost from 3 000 to 6 000 euro per year, and for EU citizens and certain preferential categories, tuition-free education may be available. Pharmacy in Poland most often costs from 2 000 to 4 000 euro per year.

Career prospects after graduation

Graduates of Polish medical universities receive diplomas recognized in EU countries, which opens the door to an international medical career. Education is delivered in line with European standards, making further professional development easier.

After graduation, students can complete internships, residency training, and specialization in Poland or other EU countries, including Germany, the Scandinavian countries, and the United Kingdom, provided language and local requirements are met.

Some graduates choose an academic pathway, continuing their studies in Master’s, PhD, and research programs, particularly in pharmacy, medicine, and biomedical sciences.

A Polish medical diploma also allows graduates to work in clinics, hospitals, medical centers, and research institutions. For many international graduates, Poland becomes a starting point for a medical career in other European countries.
