Study in Cyprus

Study in Cyprus: EU Universities, Real Costs and the Visa Route

English-taught degrees in an EU country, with current fees, entry permit steps and the rules other guides leave out.

When you study in Cyprus, you earn a degree from an EU member state, and private universities teach most programs in English. Bachelor's tuition at private universities runs from about €9,000 to €11,800 a year (current fee lists). Medicine costs €23,000–24,000 a year.

Cyprus suits applicants from Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Egypt and the Gulf who want an English-taught EU degree in business, IT, law, psychology, pharmacy or medicine. It also suits students planning a master's: graduates at master's level and above can stay up to 12 months to look for work. Families need to be ready to pay at least the first semester and provide a bank guarantee before the student travels.

Cyprus is a weaker fit if you need an English-taught bachelor's at a public university: those programs are almost all in Greek. It is also a weak fit if you plan to fund your studies from part-time work, or if you expect free travel across the Schengen area on a Cyprus residence permit. Below we cover costs, universities, admission, the visa and the limits you should know before you apply.

How much does it cost to study in Cyprus?

Tuition depends on the university type, the level and the program. The figures below are current fees for students from outside the EU. Fees for the next academic year have not been published yet, so treat them as a guide and confirm before you pay.

Tuition is only part of the budget. Expect these one-off costs in the first year:

  • Application fees: €50 (UCLan Cyprus), €60 (UNIC), €80 at EUC and €200 for its medicine, dentistry and veterinary programs.
  • University visa-handling fees: €150 at UNIC, €200 at Frederick, €210 at UCLan Cyprus (visa application and alien book). UNIC also takes a €400 international student guarantee, refunded when you leave the university.
  • Government fees: €55–140 depending on the permit combination, paid in Cyprus.
  • Bank guarantee: €350, €550 or €850 depending on your nationality (details in the admission section).
  • Payment before entry: non-EU students must pay at least the first semester before arrival. EUC asks for a €3,000 tuition deposit before visa documents are sent. At CUT, master's students pay €1,925 or €2,700 before the visa, depending on the program.

Medicine carries extra costs. At UNIC, first-year one-off payments include a €1,500 administration fee and a €3,500 seat deposit, plus malpractice insurance of €300 a year in years 1–4 and €600–1,250 in years 5–6. Clinical placements in the UK or US in years 5–6 are optional and add €6,000 a year. See the full breakdown on our medicine in Cyprus page and in the cost of studying in Cyprus guide.

Scholarships are limited. UCLan Cyprus offers 50% and 40% grade-based discounts, but thresholds are published only for Cypriot, Russian and IB certificates. UNIC offers need-based aid of up to 20% for medicine after enrollment. EUC excludes medicine, dentistry and veterinary programs from scholarships.

Types of universities in Cyprus

Universities in Cyprus fall into three groups: private universities, a UK branch campus and public universities. For most international applicants, the choice is between the first two, because public bachelor's programs are taught in Greek.

All UNIC bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees are accredited by the Republic of Cyprus. Programs are evaluated by CYQAA, the national quality agency. UCLan Cyprus graduates receive two certificates: one from the University of Lancashire (formerly the University of Central Lancashire, UK) and one from UCLan Cyprus. The campus is accredited by the UK Quality Assurance Agency and by CYQAA.

KYSATS, the state recognition body, is part of the ENIC, NARIC and MERIC networks. Compare programs in detail on our universities and admission page.

Admission requirements and steps

Private universities admit on your school certificate and English score. The university, not the student, files the entry permit application with the Cyprus authorities.

Typical entry requirements (current university pages):

  • Bachelor's at UNIC: a school certificate with a grade of 7.5/10 or 15/20, and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 72.
  • Bachelor's at UCLan Cyprus: a school certificate or 96 UCAS points from A-levels, and IELTS 5.5.
  • Bachelor's at EUC: completed secondary education and IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 or PTE Academic 66. Non-EU visa students cannot use EUC's internal English test.
  • Master's: usually IELTS 6.5 (UNIC, UCLan Cyprus). At UCLan Cyprus, a bachelor's at Lower Second (2:2) level or equivalent.
  • Medicine: a school average of about 90% with biology plus chemistry, physics or math, IELTS 6.5 and an interview (UNIC, EUC).

How admission works, step by step

1

Shortlist programs — check the teaching language, entry grades and English score for each one.

2

Prepare documents — school certificate, passport valid for at least 2 years, English certificate. All documents need an official translation and certification, plus an apostille or consular legalization depending on your country.

3

Apply and pay the application fee — you receive a conditional or unconditional offer. Medicine applicants also have an interview.

4

Pay the deposit or first semester — this is required before the entry permit application.

5

The university files your entry permit — the Migration Department and the Ministry of Education review it. The official time is 1 month with a complete file; plan for around 6–8 weeks.

6

Travel and register — within 7 days of arrival, register in the aliens register and apply for a temporary residence permit.

Pakistan joined the apostille convention in 2023 and Bangladesh on 30 March 2025, so documents from both countries now take an apostille instead of consular legalization. The bank guarantee covers possible removal costs. A university can provide a group guarantee for its students; ask your university before you arrange one yourself.

Deadlines for the next intake are not published yet. As a guide, UNIC lists late June for the fall intake, and EUC has used 31 August as the fall visa deadline for non-EU students. EUC asks for visa documents at least 3 months before the semester starts. Start in spring to leave time for the entry permit.

Cyprus student visa and entry permit

Non-EU students enter Cyprus on an entry permit filed by the university, then switch to a residence permit after arrival. You cannot apply while you are in Cyprus on a tourist or visitor visa. You must apply from outside Cyprus or hold another valid residence permit.

Before arrival, the file includes a passport, a home-country bank letter and statement, a police clearance certificate, tests for hepatitis B and C, HIV and syphilis, a chest X-ray, the admission letter, the bank guarantee and academic documents. After arrival, you repeat the medical tests in Cyprus and add "Plan A" health insurance, a rental contract and a letter from a Cyprus bank. The residence permit is issued for up to 1 year and renewed each year with your transcript. Full details are on our Cyprus student visa page.

Question 1
Who fills out the form?

What to know before you apply

These are the points applicants most often learn too late. Each one has a workable answer if you plan ahead.

The honest checklist

  • This is the Republic of Cyprus, not North Cyprus. The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey, and degrees from its universities are not directly recognized in the EU or in the Republic of Cyprus. Check which side a university is on before you apply.
  • No fixed bank balance in the law, but universities set one. EUC and CUT ask for at least €7,000; UNIC asks for at least first-year tuition. We check your university's rule before you open a statement.
  • The bank guarantee depends on nationality. Applicants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Central Asia pay €850; Egypt and the Gulf states pay €350. The guarantee must be valid for at least 10 years, and electronic money institutions cannot issue it.
  • Public bachelor's programs are taught in Greek. At UCY, only English Studies is taught in English at bachelor's level. At CUT, all bachelor's programs are in Greek. For an English-taught bachelor's, look at private universities; for a public university, look at English-taught master's programs.
  • Student work is restricted. You may work up to 20 hours a week during semesters and up to 38 hours a week in holidays. Only sectors listed by a Ministry of Labour decree are allowed, and the district labour office must approve the contract first. Do not build your budget on a job.
  • Only master's graduates can stay to look for work. The 12-month post-study stay does not apply to bachelor's graduates.
  • Cyprus is in the EU but not a full Schengen member. A Cyprus student residence permit does not give you the automatic travel rights of a Schengen permit. Plan any trips to other EU countries with visas where needed.
  • Limassol costs more to live in. CUT itself estimates €800–1,000 a month for living costs in Limassol, and private rents there are generally higher than in Nicosia. Budget per city, not per country.
  • Medical graduates: check recognition at home. Neither UNIC nor EUC lists recognition by specific national medical councils. Confirm the rules with your home regulator before you enroll.

Living costs, work and student life

Housing is the biggest living cost, and universities publish their own estimates. UNIC estimates yearly living costs of €4,000–6,000 for shared housing or €6,000–10,000 for a private room, plus €3,350–5,000 for food and personal costs and €400–500 for books. For medical students, UNIC sets the minimum living budget in Nicosia at €12,000 a year.

EUC reports rents near its Nicosia campus at €600–1,000 a month, plus €600–900 for other monthly costs. EUC residences are a 5-minute walk from campus. At UCY, first-year and international students are offered single rooms with a shared kitchen and bathroom, but places are limited. CUT offers international master's students up to 50 rooms in Limassol at €550 a month on a 12-month contract. Its new Verengaria residence reaches full capacity from 2027/28.

Health insurance is compulsory: €175 a year at UNIC, or €180 for medical students. Student life centers on Nicosia (UNIC, EUC, UCY), Limassol (CUT) and Pyla near Larnaca, where UCLan Cyprus has a residence a minute's walk from campus.

Universities we work with

We help applicants shortlist, prepare documents and plan the visa route for these five universities. Each has its own page with fees, entry requirements and deadlines.

  • **University of Nicosia (UNIC)** — a private university in Nicosia with English-taught programs from business to architecture. Its 6-year MD costs €24,000 a year.
  • **European University Cyprus (EUC)** — a private university in Nicosia with a medical school since 2013 and the first dentistry program in Cyprus since 2017. MD and dentistry cost €23,000 a year.
  • **UCLan Cyprus** — a UK branch campus opened in 2012 in Pyla, Larnaca district. Graduates receive two certificates, from the UK university and UCLan Cyprus; bachelor's tuition is €9,000 a year. It does not offer medicine, dentistry or pharmacy.
  • **University of Cyprus (UCY)** — the public university in Nicosia, ranked 525 in QS World University Rankings, according to the university. Realistic for international students at master's level; standard master's programs cost €5,125 in total.
  • **Cyprus University of Technology (CUT)** — a public university in Limassol. Most master's programs are in Greek, with some English-taught options such as MSc Interaction Design and MSc Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

At UCY and CUT, you apply through the university's online portal yourself. We check your eligibility, prepare the documents and review the application before you submit it. We also build a backup plan at a private university.
