Admission to Universities in North Cyprus: Requirements, Documents and Steps
What you need to apply, how English and prep year work, and how to pick a program with degree recognition in mind.
Most universities in North Cyprus admit international students on documents alone: a school-leaving certificate with transcripts, a passport and, if you have one, an English test score. As a rule there is no entrance exam, and if your English is not yet strong enough, you start with a preparatory English year on campus.
Simple entry is only half of the picture. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy set grade minimums, and recognition outside Turkey depends on the program you choose. Below is the full admission route for the next intake.

Entry requirements: school certificate, grades and no entrance exams
For a bachelor's degree you need a secondary school certificate (or an equivalent) and your transcript of grades. Universities in the TRNC generally do not run their own entrance exams for international applicants. The International Office reviews your documents and decides.
What changes from program to program is the grade bar. EMU, for example, sorts programs into four levels of requirements:
- Medicine (the highest bar).
- Dentistry and pharmacy.
- Engineering, architecture and health sciences.
- All other programs.
For medicine, EMU asks for 3 A-Levels (biology and chemistry, plus mathematics or physics) at grade B or higher, or an IB score of at least 30 out of 42. Applicants with WAEC, national certificates from Pakistan, India or the Gulf, or other school systems are assessed against the university's own table. If you plan to study medicine, your biology and chemistry grades matter more than anything else in the file.

English requirements and the preparatory year
English is the main language of teaching at most programs you will look at. Your test score decides whether you go straight into year one or spend a year in English preparatory school first. At EMU, an IELTS or TOEFL certificate is valid for 2 years, so an old score may not count.
No certificate is not a barrier to admission. At CIU, you take the university's English exam after arrival. The first attempt is free, a second costs €100, and later attempts cost €150 each. If you do not pass, you join the Foundation (English Preparatory) School. CIU's scholarship also covers this Foundation year.
The prep year adds time and money, so plan for it honestly:
- EMU, current price list: English Preparatory School costs $3,520–4,613 per year depending on your scholarship, plus $250 per semester for books and exams.
- GAU, previous year's price list: the preparatory English year is listed at €7,700 before any discount. GAU has not yet published its current table.
How to apply: step by step
Check the program: confirm that it is taught in English and is on the recognition list you need (see the section on choosing a program below).
Prepare documents: school certificate and transcript, passport scan, English certificate if you have one, and a photo.
Apply online through the university portal, for example apply.emu.edu.tr for EMU or the CIU online portal.
Receive a Conditional Acceptance Letter. At CIU, the International Office assesses your file and states the scholarship and the initial deposit in this letter.
Pay the initial deposit shown in the letter and receive the Unconditional Acceptance Letter.
Arrange travel. Flights to Ercan airport go only through Turkey, so check whether you need a Turkish visa for your route.

Documents: what to prepare and how translations work
The standard document pack is short. At CIU, the application requires:
- the application form;
- your school certificate or equivalent (O/A-Level, WAEC/NECO and others) with transcripts;
- a scan of your passport or birth certificate;
Intakes and dates
Universities have not yet published their application deadlines for the next intake. The academic year usually starts in September, and many programs also admit students in a spring semester. Exact dates and which programs accept spring entry are published by each university closer to the intake.
For reference, in CIU's academic calendar autumn classes start in late September and spring classes in early February. Medicine at CIU follows its own schedule. Use these dates only to understand the rhythm of the year, not as deadlines.
Apply early for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Grade review takes longer, and the scholarship percentage is set at the application stage.

How to choose among universities in North Cyprus with recognition in mind
Choosing a program here is not only about the price and the city. The key question is where you plan to use your degree after graduation.
- Check the program, not only the university. Turkey recognizes TRNC universities under a Turkey–TRNC agreement. International graduates who want to use the degree in Turkey apply for equivalence (denklik) at YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education. Bachelor's programs that are not in the ÖSYS guide (Turkey's central admission guide) are not considered in the denklik procedure.
- Verify the university with YÖK. You can check whether YÖK recognizes a specific university through the YÖK "Okul Tanıma Belgesi" service (okultanima.yok.gov.tr).
Scholarships and discounts at admission
Private universities usually show a "base" price and then apply an automatic scholarship for international students. CIU gives all international bachelor's students 50%, plus academic scholarships of 50–100% by grades. At EMU, the percentage is set by your grades and program and stated in your acceptance letter.
Medicine and dentistry are the main exception. At EMU, the scholarship for them is 30–45% instead of 60–75%. At Near East University, the automatic 50% discount does not apply to medicine and dentistry.
As a rough guide, most English-taught programs cost approximately €3,000–6,500 or $4,500–6,500 per year after standard discounts, and medicine from about €11,000 to $18,000 per year. For full price tables, see tuition fees and living costs in North Cyprus.
What to know before you apply
AcademGo tells applicants what many agencies leave out, and then shows the whole route in advance. Here are the points to settle before you pay any deposit.
Recognition. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is recognized only by Turkey. Degrees from its universities are not automatically recognized in the EU, and the Republic of Cyprus does not recognize them at all. The TRNC is not part of the Bologna Process. The working path goes through Turkey: universities are licensed and accredited by the local regulator YÖDAK and recognized by Turkey's YÖK; international graduates need YÖK denklik to use the degree in Turkey. This does not mean "recognized nowhere": the University of Southampton in the UK, for example, accepts North Cyprus bachelor's degrees for master's study, and US credential evaluators assess such degrees individually. Legalization. An apostille cannot be issued in the TRNC. Diplomas are certified by the Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa, usually through the university's student office, and are then processed in Turkey: sworn translation, notary, and an apostille or consular legalization by the relevant Turkish authority.
Your home country. Ask your own recognition authority before you apply, especially for medicine or any regulated profession. According to GAU's founding rector in 2020, Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE stopped recognizing TRNC degrees. If you plan to work in the Gulf or in Egypt, check this first.
Entry and the Green Line. You fly in via Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus treats entry through Ercan and northern ports as illegal. According to the UK government, this can mean a fine, refusal of entry to or exit from the Republic of Cyprus, and a ban on returning to the north. If your goal is Europe, North Cyprus is not the route to it.
Discounts and refunds. Discounts often exclude medicine and dentistry. At CIU, deposits are refunded only if your visa is refused, with a letter from the embassy; no other reason qualifies. Read these rules before paying.
