Near East University, North Cyprus: A Straight Guide for International Applicants

Near East University (NEU) is a private university in Nicosia (Lefkoşa), the capital of North Cyprus. According to the university and public sources, it was founded in 1988 and is one of the largest universities in North Cyprus, with more than 25,000 students from over 100 nationalities. Its campus includes a university hospital, which matters if you are looking at medicine, dentistry or pharmacy taught in English.
NEU suits applicants who want an English-taught degree at a moderate price, a large campus and a simple admission process based on documents. For most bachelor's programs, international students get an automatic 50% scholarship, so fees are among the lower ones for English-taught study.
It does not suit you if your goal is to work in the EU, in the Republic of Cyprus, or in a country that does not accept degrees from North Cyprus. North Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey. Read the section on limitations below before you apply.

NEU's official fee table was not accessible when we checked. The figures below are approximate, based on secondary sources. The university's official price list confirms the exact amount for your program, and we check it for you before you apply.

Master's programs |
Two points matter for your budget. First, the 50% scholarship does not cover medicine and dentistry, so ignore offers that promise "half price medicine" at NEU. NEU does offer separate merit scholarships for these programs, and we can tell you whether your grades might qualify. Second, registration fees, other charges and refund terms were not in the sources we could verify. Ask for the full total before you pay a deposit. Programs and the degree you receive
NEU teaches medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine in both English and Turkish. According to secondary sources, medicine takes 6 years and dentistry 5 years. The university also teaches engineering in English, and NEU reports that several engineering programs received ASIIN accreditation with the EUR-ACE label. Graduates receive a Near East University degree. The university is accredited by YÖDAK in North Cyprus and recognized by Turkey under the intergovernmental agreement. The degree does not become Turkish automatically for international graduates. To use it in Turkey, you apply to YÖK for an equivalence certificate (denklik).
One detail can save you years. YÖK only considers bachelor's programs that appear in the Turkish central admission guide (ÖSYS). Near East University admission requirements for international students
NEU admits most applicants on documents, without an entrance exam. The steps below cover the next intake. NEU has not yet published its dates; the university announces them closer to the intake.
How to apply to NEU

Check your grades — NEU accepts national school certificates and international curricula such as GCSE/IGCSE, IB and SAT/ACT. For medicine, expect stricter requirements; we confirm the minimum grades for your curriculum.

Prove your English — IELTS 5.5 or an equivalent TOEFL score. Without a certificate, you take NEU's English exam. If you do not pass it, you start with a preparatory English course.

Prepare your documents — school certificate, transcript and passport. Documents not in English or Turkish need an official translation. We tell you in advance whether your country requires attestation of school documents.

Submit the application — send the package through the university's application system and receive an offer letter with the fee for your program.

Confirm the place — pay the deposit only after you see the official fee, including all charges, for your program.

What to know before you apply
- North Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognize NEU degrees. You cannot use them for regulated professions there, such as medicine or law.
- North Cyprus is not part of the Bologna Process. In the EU, recognition is individual, through an ENIC-NARIC center or a specific university. For regulated professions such as medicine, a North Cyprus degree does not qualify for automatic EU recognition.
- The degree can still open doors abroad case by case. For example, the University of Southampton (UK) accepts North Cyprus bachelor's degrees for master's entry. US credential evaluators such as ACEI assess each degree individually.
Rankings and accreditation
We did not find a ranking for NEU that we could verify from a primary source, so we do not quote one here. What we can confirm is the formal status. NEU operates under YÖDAK, the higher education regulator of North Cyprus, which licenses and accredits universities there. Turkey recognizes North Cyprus universities through an intergovernmental agreement, and YÖK handles equivalence for foreign graduates.
You can check whether YÖK recognizes a specific university through the YÖK "Okul Tanıma Belgesi" service. Program accreditations can help when a university or employer abroad evaluates your degree. They do not replace recognition by a state.
Housing and student life
NEU has dormitories on campus. We did not find current dormitory prices from a reliable source, so we confirm them with your offer. According to public sources, the main campus covers about 98 hectares and also has a hospital, a school and a large library. The university hospital opened in 2009, a year after the medical faculty.
Daily life in North Cyprus runs in Turkish lira, while NEU bills tuition in euros. Lira prices rise often because of high inflation, so plan your living budget in EUR or USD. Our North Cyprus overview covers cities, transport and daily life.
Student visa and residence permit
Most international students get their entry visa for North Cyprus on arrival, valid up to 90 days within 180. Since 24 August 2026, North Cyprus has an e-Visa system, and citizens of Nigeria must get an e-Visa before travel. Flights to Ercan Airport go only via Turkey, so check the Turkish visa rules for your passport too.
After arrival, you apply online for the student residence permit. Next comes a medical check at an authorized clinic in North Cyprus; certificates from other countries are not accepted. Apply within about 30 days of your visa start date. The permit does not allow you to work; a job needs a separate work permit arranged by the employer. Other options in North Cyprus
If NEU does not fit your budget or program, compare it with Eastern Mediterranean University, Cyprus International University and Girne American University. If recognition matters most, look at METU Northern Cyprus Campus: its graduates receive a degree from METU in Ankara, a state university in Turkey.
