Is Eastern Mediterranean University public or private?

EMU is a state university of North Cyprus, created under an agreement between Turkey and North Cyprus. The other large universities popular with international students there are private. Its fees are still paid in full by international students, in USD.

How much does EMU cost per year for international students?

Under the current price list, most bachelor's programs cost $4,450–6,400 a year, paid in advance, including fees and VAT. Engineering costs $4,700–6,799 and pharmacy $5,485–7,629. Medicine costs $14,510–18,140 a year for the years at EMU.

Is the EMU degree recognized?

EMU is accredited by YÖDAK and recognized by Turkey (YÖK). International graduates need a YÖK equivalence certificate to use the degree in Turkey. Other countries, including EU states, assess it case by case, and the Republic of Cyprus does not recognize it.

Do I need IELTS to study at EMU?

No, but it saves time. With IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 65, or PTE 42, you skip the preparatory year for most programs; medicine needs IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72, or PTE 50. Without a certificate, you take EMU's English test or a preparatory year.

Where do EMU medical students study?

Is there an entrance exam at EMU?

At current prices, an EMU dormitory costs from $1,420 a year for a 4-person room to $2,835–3,600 for a single room, paid in full. Electricity, water, internet, and cleaning are included; the summer term is not.

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) is a state university in Famagusta, on the east coast of North Cyprus. It started in 1979 as a technical institute with 105 students and became a university in 1986, with English as its main language of teaching. Today it reports more than 16,000 students from 110 countries.

EMU suits applicants who want an English-taught degree at a clear price in USD, including medicine that finishes at Marmara University in Istanbul. It does not suit you if you need automatic recognition in the EU, Egypt, or the Gulf: North Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey. We explain the recognition route below.

Tuition fees

EMU sets its fees in US dollars. The current prices below include the Student Services Fund, VAT, and the filing fee, and apply when you pay a full year in advance. Each price already includes a "scholarship" discount: 60–75% for most programs, 30–45% for medicine and dentistry. EMU sets your percentage from your grades and program, and states it in your acceptance letter.

Programs and the degree you receive

EMU has faculties of Arts & Sciences, Business & Economics, Communication, Computer & Information Sciences, Tourism (including Gastronomy), Engineering, Architecture, Education, Law, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Medicine, plus 2–3 year associate programs. Some programs also run in Turkish, so check the language on each program page.

Medicine lasts six years in English, plus a preparatory English year if needed. Years one to three are at EMU in Famagusta; years four to six are at the Faculty of Medicine of Marmara University in Istanbul. The diploma is co-signed by both faculties, and the program is accredited by TEPDAD, the Turkish medical education accreditation body.

Admission requirements for international students

EMU has no entrance exam: it admits students on their school certificate, with minimum grades by certificate type and program group. From strictest to most flexible, the groups are Medicine; Dentistry and Pharmacy; Engineering, Architecture, and Health Sciences; and all other programs. For medicine, EMU asks, for example, for three A-Levels at B or higher (Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Physics) or an IB score of at least 30/42. Minimums for WAEC and other national certificates are in EMU's admission table, and we check them against your results.

How to apply to EMU

Check your grades — compare your certificate with EMU's minimums for your program group.

Prove your English — to skip the preparatory year, most programs need IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 65, or PTE 42; medicine and translation need IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72, or PTE 50. Certificates are valid for two years. Without one, you take EMU's English test or a preparatory year.

Prepare your documents — school certificate and transcript, passport, and English certificate, translated and certified as needed. We check them before you upload anything.

Apply online — you submit the application yourself on apply.emu.edu.tr; your scholarship percentage appears in the acceptance letter.

What to know before you apply

Recognition. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized only by Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognize its degrees, North Cyprus is outside the Bologna Process, and EU countries assess these degrees case by case. Before you apply, ask your home country's recognition authority how it treats a North Cyprus degree; we help you prepare that request.
Egypt and the Gulf. In 2020, a North Cyprus university rector said Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and the UAE had stopped recognizing North Cyprus degrees. It is one person's statement, not an official list, but check before you commit if you plan to work there.

Rankings and accreditation of Eastern Mediterranean University

EMU is accredited by YÖDAK, the North Cyprus higher education regulator. Turkey's Council of Higher Education (YÖK) recognizes North Cyprus universities under a bilateral agreement in force since 2011; this is not "YÖK accreditation." An international graduate who wants to use the degree in Turkey applies to YÖK for an equivalence certificate (denklik). Only bachelor's programs listed in Turkey's ÖSYS admission guide can be assessed, so check your program is on that list.

Program accreditations include ABET for eight engineering bachelor's programs, FIBAA for business, economics, and tourism, ASIIN for IT and Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAAB and MİAK for architecture, TEPDAD for medicine, and ACPE and PCN for pharmacy. EMU is a member of AACSB, not AACSB-accredited, and its EUA membership is not EU recognition of its degrees. Program accreditation can help when a university or employer assesses your degree, but it guarantees nothing.

The degree does work for further study in some places. The University of Southampton (UK) accepts North Cyprus bachelor's degrees for master's entry if accredited by YÖK/YÖDAK, and US credential evaluators assess them individually. North Cyprus cannot issue an apostille: diplomas are certified by the Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa, then translated, notarized, and apostilled or legalized in Turkey.

Housing and student life

Most first-year students live in EMU dormitories or in private dormitories on campus (such as Alfam, Uğursal, Akdeniz, Homedorm, and Ramen). Dormitory prices are in USD for the academic year, excluding the summer term. Electricity, water, internet, and cleaning are included.

Paying in four installments costs more: $1,540–5,100 depending on the room. Everyday costs are paid in Turkish lira, which rises often, so plan your budget in USD or EUR. Campus life is international, with students from 110 countries studying together in English.

Student visa

You reach North Cyprus through Turkish airports: flights to Ercan come only from Turkey, so check whether you need a Turkish visa. Since August 24, 2026, North Cyprus runs an e-Visa system; Nigerians must get one before travel, while most nationalities get a visa on arrival. After arrival, you apply online for a student residence permit, pass a medical check at an authorized clinic in North Cyprus, and pay the fees, usually within 30 days of entry.
