Study in North Cyprus: What It Costs, How to Get In and What to Check First
English-taught degrees at some of the lowest fees in the region, simple entry via Turkey, and recognition limits you should understand first.
If you plan to study in North Cyprus, you are looking at one of the most affordable ways to earn a degree taught in English. At most universities, tuition after the standard discount is roughly €3,000–6,500 or $4,500–6,500 a year (current price lists). Admission is usually based on your school documents, not an entrance exam. Most nationalities can enter on a visa issued at arrival.
North Cyprus suits you if you want an English-taught bachelor's degree on a moderate budget and plan your career in Turkey, in the UK through a master's degree, or in a country that assesses foreign degrees case by case. It also suits engineering applicants aiming for METU Northern Cyprus Campus, which awards a diploma from a Turkish state university.
It does not suit you if your goal is to live and work in the EU or in the Republic of Cyprus. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is recognized only by Turkey, so local degrees are not automatically recognized in the EU and are not recognized in the Republic of Cyprus at all. How much does it cost to study in North Cyprus?
Fees depend on the university type and the program, and almost every price list includes a built-in discount for international students. Private universities quote fees in euros, while EMU and METU NCC quote in US dollars. The ranges below are for one academic year and show the price-list year. Figures marked "about" come from secondary sources and are confirmed by the university's own fee table or your acceptance letter.

Three details change the real price. First, most universities add yearly fees on top of tuition: €500 a year at GAU and $500 per semester at METU NCC, while EMU already includes them in its table. Second, the discount usually depends on the program. At NEU the automatic 50% discount does not apply to medicine and dentistry, and at EMU the scholarship for medicine and dentistry is 30–45% instead of 60–75%. Third, some universities lock your fee. CIU fixes tuition for the official duration of study, and GAU's 50% scholarship is valid for the whole degree.

Types of universities in North Cyprus
North Cyprus universities fall into three groups, and the group affects your diploma, your fees and your discount. EMU is the state university of the TRNC. NEU, CIU and GAU are private. METU NCC is a special case: it is a campus of Middle East Technical University, a Turkish state university based in Ankara.

Admission requirements
Most universities in North Cyprus admit international students on the basis of school documents, without their own entrance exams. The main exception is medicine and other competitive programs, where universities set minimum grades. At EMU, for example, medicine requires three A-Levels, including biology and chemistry plus mathematics or physics, all at grade B or higher, or an IB score of at least 30/42. How to apply to a university in North Cyprus

Check recognition first. Before you choose a program, confirm how your home country and future employers treat TRNC degrees (see "What to know before you apply" below).

Prepare your documents: school-leaving certificate and transcript, passport, English certificate if you have one, and a photo. Documents not in English need a certified translation.

Apply online through the university portal, for example apply.emu.edu.tr, apply.gau.edu.tr or apply.ncc.metu.edu.tr. No entrance exam is required at most universities.

Receive a conditional or provisional acceptance letter. It states the deposit amount and, at EMU, your scholarship percentage. Read the refund rules before you pay.

Pay the deposit and receive the unconditional or official acceptance letter. You need this letter for your visa and travel.

Documents by country of school
- Nigeria: WAEC or NECO results. CIU lists them among accepted certificates.
- Pakistan, Bangladesh and GCC residents on British-system certificates: O-Levels and A-Levels. For medicine at EMU, the A-Level requirement above applies.
- India, Egypt and other national systems: your national school-leaving certificate with a full transcript. NEU accepts national certificates as well as GCSE/IGCSE, IB and SAT/ACT.

Universities publish application deadlines and start dates closer to the intake. As a reference point, CIU's fall classes start in late September, and spring classes in early February.
Student visa and residence permit
There are no direct flights to Ercan Airport except from Turkey, so plan your route through a Turkish airport and check whether your passport needs a Turkish visa for that stop. North Cyprus introduced an e-Visa on 24 August 2026. According to reports on the new rules, Nigerian nationals must obtain an e-Visa before travel, while most other nationalities receive a visa on arrival for up to 90 days within 180 days.
After arrival, every international degree student must hold a student residence permit (Öğrenci İkamet İzni). You apply online through the TRNC Immigration Department (Muhaceret Dairesi), reportedly within 30 days of your entry visa start date. Universities advise that the medical check must be done at an authorized TRNC facility; certificates from other countries are not accepted. Fees are then paid online. According to Muhaceret Dairesi, student permit fees are 690 TL for up to 6 months, 1,015 TL for 6–12 months and 2,025 TL for 12–24 months, plus 38.70 TL stamp duty.
Your student status matters after enrollment. Universities report each student's status to the immigration system every three months, and dismissal from the university cancels the permit. After graduation or dismissal, you reportedly have 60 days of legal stay. Full details are on the student visa and residence permit page.
What to know before you apply
This is the part most applicants hear about too late. Each point below comes with a practical way to handle it.
Degree recognition: what works and what does not
The TRNC is recognized only by Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognize TRNC universities or their degrees, so working in a regulated profession there, such as medicine, law or licensed engineering, is not possible with such a degree. The TRNC is also outside the Bologna Process, which means no automatic recognition through the European system. In other EU countries, recognition is decided case by case by the national recognition center or the university.
The working route runs through Turkey. The local regulator YÖDAK licenses and accredits universities. Turkey recognizes TRNC universities under an intergovernmental agreement, and the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) is responsible for that. As an international graduate, you need a YÖK equivalence certificate (denklik) to use your degree in Turkey. Bachelor's programs that are not listed in Turkey's central admission guide (ÖSYS) are not considered for denklik, so check this before you choose a program. YÖK's "Okul Tanıma Belgesi" service lets you check whether YÖK recognizes a specific university.
Legalization also goes through Turkey. An apostille cannot be issued in the TRNC. Diplomas are certified by the Turkish Embassy in Lefkoşa, usually submitted as a batch through the university's student affairs office. The documents are then processed in Turkey: sworn translation, notary, and an apostille from the authorized Turkish authority or consular legalization. Your home country still makes the final decision.
TRNC degrees are not "never recognized anywhere." For example, the University of Southampton (UK) accepts North Cyprus bachelor's degrees for master's admission when the degree is accredited by YÖK/YÖDAK and the grades meet its requirements. US credential evaluators assess TRNC degrees individually. Program accreditations such as ABET or FIBAA can help in such assessments, but they do not make a degree recognized in the EU.
For applicants from Egypt and the Gulf, there is an extra warning. In 2020, GAU's founding rector said that Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE had stopped recognizing TRNC degrees. If you plan to work at home, especially in medicine, ask your national recognition or licensing body before you apply. Living costs, work and student life
Tuition is billed in euros or dollars, but daily life runs in Turkish lira (TL), the currency used in the TRNC. Lira prices rise quickly. The TRNC net minimum wage went from 52,738 TL in January 2026 to 61,677 TL from 1 July 2026, about 17% in six months. Plan your budget in EUR or USD rather than in lira.
On-campus housing is the most predictable cost. EMU dormitories for international students cost $1,420 a year in a 4-person room and $1,850 in a 2-person room (paid upfront), with electricity, water, internet and cleaning included. A double room at GAU's Elysium Court costs €3,762 a year. METU NCC dormitories cost $1,429.50–2,962.50 per semester, based on the university's latest published page. We do not publish a monthly budget for food and transport, because no reliable source exists; we estimate it with you during the consultation.
Work is limited. A student residence permit does not give you the right to work. To work for a local employer, you need a separate work permit arranged by the employer, and working without one breaks immigration rules. Plan to fund your studies without relying on a local job.
Each university has its own setting. EMU is in Famagusta on the east coast and has over 16,000 students from 110 countries. NEU and CIU are in Nicosia (Lefkoşa); CIU's campus is in Haspolat. GAU's Karmi Campus is near Kyrenia (Girne), and METU NCC is near Güzelyurt, with about 3,150 students.
